UM Document Converter

What is the UM Document Converter?

The UM Document Converter is an online document conversion system supporting the transformation of text and image-based file types into different formats. Individuals upload files through a Web interface and select from a variety of output options, including MP3 audio, Braille, or e-book, and text formats including tagged PDF, Microsoft Word and Excel, Rich Text Format, CSV, TXT, and HTML.

Notification and delivery of a completed conversion, via hyperlink, is made via e-mail to a valid @olemiss or @go.olemiss email address. Download the file upon receipt – the system will automatically remove the conversion after several days.

Conversion Results

The quality of the conversion is dependent upon the quality of the original document. For instance, if you are converting a well-structured MS Word document into audio, PDF, or ePub format, the resulting file will be properly rendered into the desired output. If, however, you upload a poorly scanned image file for conversion to a text format, the resulting text document may include recognition errors in the output file.

You may see two options when converting an inaccessible PDF to a tagged PDF: “Text over Image” or “Image over Text.” In most cases, you will choose “Text Over Image.” Selecting the “Text Over Image” option causes PDF and image-type documents to be OCR processed and returned with the recognized text in a layer on top of the original image, resulting in much clearer text. Selecting the second option causes PDF and image-type documents to be OCR processed and returned with the original image in a layer on top of the recognized text which will allow visual elements to be clearer, but the text will not be sharpened.
